Stroke
Post-Rehabilitation

The stroke program is designed for any individual who has survived a stroke, completed rehabilitation and is seeking to continue with post-therapy activity. Participants must have a physician’s release to participate, which should include any medical recommendations and any exercise restrictions. Participants will be screened for program compatibility and will be informed of the risk factors associated with involvement.
The exercise based activities are designed to follow in-patient or out-patient rehabilitation by a medical professional. The goal is to use exercise programs to continue physical recovery and to improve cognitive function. The program will concentrate on retraining muscles through specialized exercises, with particular goals of improving basic functions such as walking, mobility, balance and the use of the hands. The goals also include improving the individual’s tolerance for prolonged physical activity, and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The overall program purpose is to improve individual independence in the activities of daily living (ADLs).
The basic post-rehabilitation stroke program will include an initial assessment and evaluation of the participant’s needs and goals based on the existing level of recovery. An individualized plan of exercise will be designed that will include one-hour training sessions with a trainer specializing in post-stroke therapy. Training sessions will be limited in size, allowing for attention to individual goals. Additionally, an optional group exercise class is offered once a week focusing on the general goals of the participants.
