Arthritis and
Fibromyalgia Program
(Group Class)

This program is designed for any individual that has been diagnosed with arthritis or fibromyalgia and is interested in maintaining physical function through specifically designed exercises. Participants must have a physician’s release to participate, which should include any medical recommendations and any exercise restrictions. Participants will be screened for program compatibility and will be informed of the risk factors associated with involvement. Participants will also be screened for level of function, so that members of the class may be grouped by exercise ability.
The classes are intended to provide a safe environment for regular exercise. Individuals with arthritis and fibromyalgia often have decreased physical activity which may lead to other physical and mental complications and side affects. The program goals include not only the improvement of certain physical parameters such as endurance and joint motion; they also emphasize health improvement through peer motivation, support and socialization. Practical benefits should include better sleep, more energy during the day, weight control, improved self-confidence, a healthier heart, stronger joints, and improvement in pain management.
The classes follow the exercise protocols established by the Arthritis Foundation®. The exercise programs are directed for the entire body, not just those joints particularly affected by arthritis or fibromyalgia. The classes will concentrate on increasing muscle strength and endurance, aerobic capacity, joint flexibility, range of motion, balance, and improvement in functional ability. Participants will be able to work at their own pace and will be instructed on how to perform the exercise in a safe manner. The class instructor will be trained specifically for these programs.
