Physical Therapy (Inpatient)

Program Qualifications:
The physical therapy program is designed for individuals who have the need to maintain or restore their physical movement and function. This program uses both passive modalities and therapeutic exercises and treatment to rehabilitate a patient. Loss of movement and function are often affected by such things as injury, a health event, disease, or the aging process. In most states physical therapists can be seen directly by appointment, however, several states still require the patient to receive a physician’s referral for therapy treatment. Additionally, a physician’s referral may be required for reimbursement by an insurance company or another third-party reimbursement source.
Program Purpose:
There are various purposes for physical therapy depending on the patient’s diagnosis. Generally, a physical therapy program will help to improve or restore mobility and movement. Physical therapy may be performed as a possible alternative to other health care options such as surgery. Other more specific purposes for physical therapy may include the management of pain, improving range of motion, increasing flexibility, building strength, and preventing the reoccurrence of an injury. A successful therapy program will also encourage behavior and lifestyle modifications to promote the overall health of the patient.
Program Description:
The therapy program will be directed by a licensed physical therapist (PT) or a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). The therapist may utilize an assistant (PTA) to help facilitate the treatment process. Therapists practice in various settings including hospitals, outpatient clinics, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers, and in the home. Treatment varies based on diagnosis but usually involves the evaluation and testing of a patient’s condition, development and implementation of a treatment program, and education and motivation to achieve a desired outcome.
Program Options:
  • Speech and occupational therapy
  • Post-therapy programs
