Senior Living Program

(Group Exercise Class)

Program Qualifications:
The senior living program is a series of group exercise classes designed for individuals living in single-family or multi-family senior communities, independent living retirement communities, assisted living and residential care facilities. or senior community centers. The program is taught by an exercise instructor who is specifically trained for senior fitness. The sponsoring facility must make available a common area able to accommodate a minimum of 10 participants. The space should be available on a consistent basis at the scheduled class times. Individuals must sign a release form for participation and must also inform the instructor of any known exercise restrictions.
Program Purpose:
The classes are designed to increase the physical activity of the participants on a regular basis basis so that they may avoid the loss of physical function that is associated with the aging process. The program will seek to enhance independence, improve mobility and balance, and to improve strength and endurance. There will also be an emphasis on social interaction through exercise. The overall purpose of the program is to improve the general health of the participant and to decrease utilization and dependence on the health care system.
Program Description:
The program will focus on multi-faceted classes that seek to improve individual health through balance, strength, aerobic and flexibility exercises. Special emphasis will be given to functional fitness training, allowing the participant to strengthen muscles and to increase endurance in areas that replicate real-life activity. Classes will also work on specific goals such as fall prevention, the improvement in joint range of motion, and enhancement of coordination and reaction abilities.
