Balance and Stability Program

Program Qualifications:
This program is designed for any individual that has balance issues or other problems with physical instability as a result of normal aging or as a result of a disease process or health event. It is also designed for those individuals wanting to take a pro-active and preventative approach to balance training with the intent of improving their physical function through the aging process. Participants may be required to have a release form or a reference from their physician for participation. All individuals will be screened for program compatibility, current level of function, and for class placement.
Program Purpose:
The purpose of the program is to improve balance through exercise techniques and programs that are designed to enhance the muscular and skeletal system of an individual. This includes working with stabilizer muscles as well as the larger muscle groups, improving posture and coordination, and working with sensory and motor skills to improve an individual’s reaction ability when confronted with situations of imbalance and instability. The program will also offer alternative balance techniques to advanced participants. Individuals that are a fall risk because of visual, vestibular, or other undetermined factors will be referred to a medical professional for further assessment. The overall program purpose is to improve balance, to prevent or delay the onset of falls, to promote independence and confidence, and to minimize injury when falls occur.
Program Description:
This program is a unique and innovative class that works with both individuals and small groups to achieve measurable improvement in balance. The program uses tools and equipment especially designed for balance training. The instructors use concepts developed by exercise professionals and physical therapists, and borrow concepts from other disciplines such as tai chi and yoga. The participants are grouped by their level of ability, and the classes are designed to be safe, effective, and enjoyable. Testing and measurement tools are used to determine balance improvement in those enrolled in the program. Each program is directed by an exercise professional or a medically trained professional specializing in balance and fall prevention.
Program Options:
  • Instruction and education on risk factors for falls
  • Nutritional counseling
