Dietary Counseling

This program is designed for any individual who has a desire to modify their nutritional regimen to improve health, to control weight, or to manage a disease process. A registered dietitian (RD) directs the counseling program, but assistance with the program may be provided by another health or fitness professional. The program accepts referrals from an individual’s physician for any new or chronic diagnosis that may require long-term dietary modification, but any individual who needs diet management and education may choose to participate.
The purpose of dietary counseling is to assist an individual in the modification of their nutritional patterns, with the intent of improving health and lifestyle. The RD is instrumental in providing science based information, as well as practical knowledge and experience, to motivate the participant to make the necessary changes in diet that will allow for the realization of his or her personal goals. The nutritional team will also provide the support and accountability necessary to facilitate a modification of diet and lifestyle. The overall purpose of the program is to improve an individual’s health and quality of life through dietary education, advice, motivation and accountability.
In the initial consultation with the RD, participants are screened for appropriateness and willingness to accept dietary change. The basic program will include an initial assessment and evaluation of the participant’s dietary history, lifestyle, and current habits. The RD will help develop goals based on the individual’s desired outcome, health diagnosis, and motivation level. Sessions will be scheduled on a recurring basis or as needed. The RD will also advise the participant about realistic expectations based on age, health diagnosis, genetic and cultural factors, motivation level, and overall willingness to make necessary modifications in diet.
